As part of its service to the community St. Mark's runs a drop-in welfare centre. It is situated at the corner of George and Moor Streets - just next to the church. Each day up to 100 people will visit the Centre for various reasons: to receive a food parcel or other assistance, to relax in the lounge, to play pool, to play in or support one of our sporting teams, or to receive advice or referral.

St Mark's Op Shop |
The Centre was opened in 1980, originally to assist single men who lived in the rooming houses in the inner city. In the 1990s de-institutionalisation and rising unemployment has seen the range of people coming to the Centre expand. As numbers coming have increased services have had to be reduced. However St. Mark's is known as a place where help is provided in a non-judgmental way to all who come seeking assistance.
The Centre depends entirely on donations to sustain its $300,000 budget. Four staff are employed, and they are assisted by about 12 volunteers. There are always opportunities for people to work in the Centre. Three times a week food parcels are given out - perhaps totalling 150 in a week. 60 parishes and schools give food donations - often very regularly. Such food donations are much appreciated, and are essential for our work.
